• As we get closer and closer to the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the discussion around the Conn Smythe Trophy heats up as well. The Conn Smythe honors the playoff MVP — not regular season performance. While we’re only in the second round, one contender has been quietly, but strongly emerging: Mikko Rantanen.

    Rantanen’s Road to Dallas

Rantanen’s seen a bit of travel throughout the beginning of 2025. After contract negation disputes, Rantanen was traded in a three way deal to the Carolina Hurricanes in January. Later in March, the Dallas Stars acquired the veteran player. Rantanen seamlessly slotted into Dallas’ top six performers, creating instant chemistry with Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. Now the Dallas Stars look deeper, faster, and primed to be strong Cup contenders.

    Playoff Stats

Through 10 playoff games, Rantanen has produced 18 points: 9 goals and 9 assists. Including 2 hat trick games back to back and involvement in 15 of the last 16 goals for the Stars. His key moment? Scoring the game 7 overtime winning goal against his former team.

Elevated Power Play and Transition Game

Offensively, Rantanen has aided the power play for the Stars’. He’s also improved the Stars’ zone entries with his puck control. Mikko Rantanen not only contributes offensively, but aids their defense – winning battles along the boards and supporting their breakout game.

    Rantanen vs. McDavid

No Conn Smythe conversation is complete without Connor McDavid. The Oilers captain is performing just as expected, contributing to goals and assists for the whole team. Yet currently Rantanen has more goals, and arguably more timely ones. McDavid is the engine of the Oilers team, but Rantanen is thriving in a deep, balanced Stars lineup.

Between these two star players, it could come down to who can maintain their current production and who makes it to the Final.

    Rantanen’s Value is Clear

It’s easy to see that Rantanen has definitely been worth every dollar the Stars’ spent to acquire him. If the Stars make the Final — and Rantanen continues this level of production — he’ll be a serious frontrunner for the Conn Smythe Trophy.

  • A full breakdown of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 2 matchups, including key storylines, player watchlists, and schedule info for each series in the Eastern and Western Conference.

Nearly two weeks into the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, and we are finally moving onto round two. While no teams swept in round one, some games were definitely more intense than others. But now all teams must put the last round behind them and look ahead to being one step closer to holding Lord Stanley.

    Eastern Conference Matchups

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers

This match-up may feel like deja-vu for Leafs and Panthers fan. Back in 2023, the Florida Panthers faced the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning the second round series in 5 games.

The Panthers look to capitalize on their momentum coming off a 4-1 series win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Panthers leaned on physicality and playoff-tested core, and they look poised to continue.

Meanwhile the Maple Leafs showed great resilience after overcoming the Ottawa Senators in six games. The Leafs’ Core 4 (Matthews, Nylander, Marner, and Knies) played exceptional for them and will need to continue to put up points in this next series.

Watch Game 1: Monday, May 5, 8 p.m. ET in Toronto (ESPN, Sportsnet, CBC, TVA Sports).

    Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes

This is the second-ever playoff meeting of the Capitals and Hurricanes – last time ending with a Carolina win in the 2019 first-round series in seven games. When we saw the Capitals and Hurricanes play during the regular season, it was nothing short of entertaining.

The Hurricanes are coming in with momentum, despite losing veteran goalie Frederik Andersen to injury. Pyotr Kochetkov will be their net minder, backed by Carolina’s aggressive 5-on-5 play and blue-line depth.

Washington, on the other hand, relied on disciplined structure and veteran leadership of Alex Ovechkin. This series could hinge on goaltending, as Logan Thompson looks to outduel a relatively unproven Carolina crease.

Watch Game 1: Tuesday, May 6, 7 p.m. ET in Washington (ESPN).

    Western Conference Matchups

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Edmonton Oilers

These two teams will see a rematch of the 2023 second-round series, previously won by Vegas in six games.

The Edmonton Oilers are coming off an impressive 0-2 comeback against the LA Kings, winning 4 games straight. The offensive power of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl is equally challenging to their experience in the playoffs.

Vegas, however, won’t back down. Their forward depth, led by Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl, combined with a stingy blueline, will make this a heavyweight clash in the truest sense.

    Dallas Stars vs. Winnipeg Jets

The Dallas Stars are coming off an intense game 7 series against the Colorado Avalanche

The good news for Dallas? Both Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen are expected to return for Round 2. Their presence could tilt the balance in what’s shaping up to be a highly competitive matchup regardless of the opponent.

Meanwhile Winnipeg is coming off a hard fought battle against the St. Luis Blues, winning the series in a game 7 double overtime. The series win should hopefully give the President Trophy winning team some confidence going into this next matchup.

    In Conclusion

If Round 1 offered a glimpse into the chaos and intensity of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Round 2 is set to deliver even more drama, highlight-reel goals, and controversial calls. The road to the Cup gets narrower—and nastier—from here.

  • The 2025 NHL Playoffs are already delivering major surprises, key injuries, and thrilling OT finishes. From Minnesota’s underdog run to Edmonton’s struggles, here’s a breakdown of the biggest storylines so far.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Deliver Early Drama

We’re currently halfway through round 1 of the playoffs, and it’s clear to me why everyone says that playoff hockey is the best hockey. With every team fighting for their right to hold Lord Stanley over their heads, the games have been full of upsets, injuries, intense overtimes, and of course, incredible goals.

Biggest Surprises of the 2025 NHL Playoffs

The biggest surprise so far? The Minnesota Wild leading their series against the Vegas Golden Nights. The Wild snuck into the postseason as the first Wild Card in the West, the Wild have come out swinging. Facing off against a Vegas squad led by Jack Eichel, few expected Minnesota to hold a series lead — but they’ve looked every bit like contenders through the first two games.

Another shock? The LA Kings ruling their series with a 2-0 lead. Putting up 6 goals in each game, the Oilers defense haven’t had an answer to the offensive power of Adrian Kempe, Quinton Byfield, and Andrei Kuzmenko who have been finding the back of the net for the Kings. Check out this article from ESPN for more on the latest game.

    Key Injuries & Absences

Missing a cornerstone player during playoffs can be detrimental to a team:

    • Matthew Tkachuk is back on the ice and playing exactly how you’d expect him too for the Fla Panthers.
    • The Edmonton Oilers are still missing Mattias Ekholm.
    • The Dallas Stars remain without Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson, both ruled out for Game 4 vs. Colorado.
    • New Jersey Devils are still missing Jonas Siegenthaler, Jack Hughes, and Brendan Dillon — with no confirmed return timeline.
